Fresh Meat Danceteria 14 "Dance Music" Nathan Drew Larsen's 'No More Lonely Nights' Mix
This week's Danceteria, "No More Lonely Nights" is a "Dance Music" mix by Fresh Meat's Nathan Drew Larsen. Here's what Nathan has to say about the mix:
"I who had nothing." Disco djs like Walter Gibbons believed in telling stories and exploring themes through their song selections. I fell in love this summer and this mix is all about it. The songs here deeply resonated with me the last few months, finding their way on this mix with little or no conscious programming on my part. The song order has more to do with emotion than the fetishized "transformation" at the heart of modern house "mix" culture. David Mancuso rarely beat matched a sequence of songs for transition - why would he do such a limiting thing?
The mix includes three non-“disco” songs. In the early 70's there was "disco" culture and music played at discos, but no disco "form" (obviously the "disco sound" had concretized by the mid-70s). Thus, nearly everything could be "disco," depending on the setting and crowd. So as legend goes, creative djs like Nicky Siano fortified their sets with tunes far afield of music conceived for the club. Starting the mix with Umleitung by Cluster is to set the stage for a rapid transition from cerebral and serene to the body and intense feeling - the parallel in my case is simply to falling hard and fast in love. Most of the beautiful songs here are featured in near entirety including the epic Moon Maiden and the two part Ain't No Mountain High. Why stop before you're finished? With that, here's to "no more lonely days, no more lonely nights..."
1. The Great Days of Steam – Run from Keystone to North Fork, West Virginia, Columbia (1975)
2. Cluster – Umleitung, Bureau B (1974)
3. Eddie Kendricks – Thanks for the Memories, Tamla (1976)
4. Nathan Drew Larsen – Thanks (Whale Time Mix) (excerpt), unreleased (2010)
